During a blower door test, a powerful fan pulls air from inside a house to lower its air pressure. The pressure change invites higher-pressure exterior air to move inside the structure through every available opening.

We use the results to identify and repair the gaps where your home loses energy. Contact North East Industries by phone or online to schedule a blower door test with us.

What is a Blower Door Test?

The purpose of a blower door test is to determine how airtight your home is. You may already be familiar with some drafts in your home, such as those you can feel around your windows and exterior doors.

At the same time, your house could have other, less noticeable gaps where you lose energy. That outside air infiltration can drive up your energy costs and make you uncomfortable with your indoor temperature.

We use a blower door test to find and seal these gaps to make your home more energy-efficient.

The test works in a few steps:
  1. Our energy experts mount a powerful fan called a blower door on the frame of an exterior door of your home. The device’s covering seals the doorway, while the fan sits in a gap at the bottom. An air pressure gauge is connected to the fan.
  2. We activate the fan so it begins pulling air outside the house. This lowers the air pressure inside the home.
  3. As the interior air pressure decreases, the higher-pressure exterior air moves to fill the home through all available means. That includes cracks, crevices, and other gaps.
  4. Our professionals use the fan’s air pressure gauge to measure the changing pressure in your home. We also measure the air infiltration in each room to determine where air enters the structure.
  5. Once we determine where your home is losing energy through exterior air transfer, we can properly air-seal the gaps to save you on heating and cooling costs.
